The School of English runs a variety of high quality English Language courses and personalised programmes of English Language tuition such as English as a Foreign Language (EFL), IELTS preparation courses and English for Academic purposes (EAP).

We have years of experience in teaching English and the Leicester School is accredited by the British Accreditation Council.

We have a wide range of courses, all of which are designed to flexibly meet the individual needs of our students. Some courses are as short as two weeks; others including English Language can be as long as eleven months.

Course details

We currently offer a number of English Language programmes. These are;

English for Academic Purposes (EAP) for students improving their English as part of their academic course or studying pre-sessional English to achieve the required entry standards for their course

English as a Foreign Language (EFL) for students wishing to improve their English outside of the formal academic course structure

IELTS courses

English for Commercial Purposes (ECP) for students (particularly company-sponsored) improving their English in specific business contexts

 

The contact time for standard EFL are 20 hours per week, the time for EAP and ECP are dependant on the individual course structure.

1: Elementary (Beginner) Level

Speaking skills for everyday use, pronunciation

Understanding everyday language, building a vocabulary

Understanding common texts, acquiring grammatical norms

Writing skills, responses, descriptions, letters

2: Pre-Intermediate Level

Developing conversational skills, fluency and accuracy

Improving listening, reading skills and increasing vocabulary

Incorporating accurate use of grammar

Writing at more length in appropriate styles

3: Intermediate Level

Taking part in discussions, understanding different kinds of spoken English and accents

Developing techniques for reading, general and academic

Paragraphs, punctuation and longer writing tasks

Planning and presentation

4: Upper-Intermediate Level

Speech presentation, general and academic discussions

Understanding talks / lectures, taking notes (listening / reading)

Analysing texts, summarising, more advanced grammar

Planning and writing of essays - to argue, persuade, discuss

The International English Language Testing Service (IELTS) is internationally recognised. It is an entry requirement for universities and further education in the UK, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand. It is also recognised by many governments and international employers. Choose from IELTS preparation on its own, or combine with General English classes
